Patrani Machchi is a classical Parsee fish item and it is quite popular at wedding ceremonies and other occasions. Generally, banana leaves are used to prepare this item. And they are easily available in any supermarkets.
The best part? This fish preparation is pretty healthy. Particularly for those who are on diet and want to shed some kilos, this steamed fish preparation works great. The soft leaf of the banana lets all the flavors mingle together when the steaming takes place. You will be glad to know that you can even prepare a vegetarian version of this recipe by making use of paneer rather than fish. Taken as a whole, this is a very simple dish prepared without oil hence now you can be able to enjoy a healthy lunch.
Fish that you can use to prepare Patrani Machchi:
To prepare patrani machchi, pomfret is used in most of the cases. However, at times, based on its availability, other fishes can even be used. Fishes such as cod, kingfish, rawas, Flounder, seabass, halibut, or Haddock can be used.
Ingredients and their proportions:
• 2 pieces pomfret fish fillet (sliced into two)
• ¾ cup coriander leaves
• 1 cup grated coconut
• 1 ½ teaspoon lemon juice
• ½ teaspoon coconut sugar
• 1 teaspoon cumin powder
• 2 green chilies
• ¼ cup mint leaves
• 2-inch piece chopped ginger
• 4 banana leaves
• Salt according to taste
The method that you need to follow for making patrani machchi:
Before anything, take a steamer and boil water in it.
Except for the banana leaves and fish fillet, mix all ingredients in a blender. You need to add 2-3 tablespoons of water to adjust the consistency. Moreover, water helps in binding the paste too. Add more salt and water if needed.
It is time to take the banana leaves. Over direct flame, roast banana leaves.
Now add a layer of that prepared paste and place a fish fillet on top of it. Coat the fillet with another layer of the paste making certain to cover each side.
Wrap the fillet in the banana leaves. Pack it using toothpicks. A thread can also be used for tying these up.
Now put this envelope kind of thing inside your steamer. On medium heat, leave it for around 7-8 minutes. And you are ready to go.
Serve it with steaming rice.
