The hot toddy is delicious, but sometimes you just want a warm, soothing drink without the alcohol. That’s when the hot not toddy comes in handy. This is the non-alcoholic version of the toddy, and it is simply an enhanced cup of warm tea. However, it’s a fantastic drink that’s ideal for cold nights.
Simply add the traditional toddy’s sweetener, citrus, and spices to your favourite hot tea and watch it transform into a delightful winter mocktail.
It’s not only a great option for non-drinkers, but it’s also one you can share with the kids. It also has a soothing effect on cold symptoms, similar to chicken soup.

Let’s look at its ingredients
· 7 ounces hot tea
· 1 tablespoon honey
· 1 teaspoon lemon juice
· 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon powder (or a cinnamon stick)
· 1/2 teaspoon cloves
· 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
· 1 slice lemon
Do follow these simple steps to make this amazing hot drink:
• Collect all of the ingredients.
• Pour the honey, lemon juice, and spices into a warm Irish coffee glass or mug.
• Pour over hot, freshly brewed tea.
• Stir everything together thoroughly.
• Garnish with a wedge of lemon.
• Serve immediately and enjoy.
TIPS
- Pour the extra water from your teapot into the glass or mug you’ll be using while you wait for your tea to brew. This warms the mug and keeps your toddy hot for a longer period. Before constructing the drink, drain the water.
- Make sure to adjust the honey and lemon to your preference. You might even discover that your tastes change depending on the type of tea you’re brewing.
- If you have whole spices, especially cloves, you can keep them in your mug by straining them through a tea ball or similar strainer. You can also use a whole stick of cinnamon instead of ground cinnamon. It also functions as a stir stick!
- Other spices can be added as desired. When you have a cold, ginger is a great addition. It can be added in-ground, paste, or sliced form as per your taste. Allspice, anise, and vanilla (part of a bean or a dash of extract) are also good options. Anything that goes into mulled wine or hot apple cider works well in toddy.
VARIATIONS
Any type of tea will work well as a hot not toddy, so experiment. Green teas are always enjoyable because they are smooth and soothing.
Mint teas and herbal tea blends (or tisanes) that are designed to calm and relax are ideal candidates, especially if you’re making toddy before bed or looking for cold relief. Floral teas infused with chamomile, rosehips, or hibiscus can serve as a nice pick up for afternoon toddy. With any of these, you may want to tone down the spices, especially the cloves.
You might want to stick with an orange blend for citrus tea. The lemon and peach tea blends are acceptable, but a spicy orange tea blend works best with this recipe.
