The months of May-June are the hottest and several coolers and summer drinks are made this time of year just for quenching the thirst and for cooling the body. Mainly in India, May-June is the season of mangoes. One can easily purchase different types of mangoes in this season.
Not to mention, mangoes are preferred by many people. And till date, I have never found anybody who doesn’t love to have mangoes. So, what better means than to combine the coolness of yogurt with the sweetness of mangoes.

Yes. I’m talking about mango lassi. In India, lassi mainly refers to yogurt-based drinks. And it generally comes in all types of flavors, some are sweet, some are salty, some have fruits, and some have mint as well. Mango lassi is a yogurt-based mango smoothie or milkshake. It is sweet, creamy, and thick, and certainly one of the best means to enjoy mangoes. For this particular mango lassi, I have used milk, yogurt, cardamom, and of course, mangoes. Though lassi is made only with yogurt. But I prefer adding little milk to this lassi because I don’t like its super thick texture. You can use yogurt only if you don’t want to add milk to your lassi.

It is one of the most favorite drinks served at Indian restaurants. The best part? You can make it easily at home too. You can make use of frozen mango, or cubed fresh, or canned mango. In case you are using fresh, you would want to use a sweet, ripe mango. If the mango is not enough ripe, then it will be tart and you would need to add more honey or sugar than you would actually like.

Is vegan mango lassi possible to make?

Yes, of course. You can make vegan mango lassi too. In that case, I would recommend all of you to use almond milk yogurt. And that will work best. Or you can even use other non-dairy yogurts while making this lassi. However, I would never suggest coconut yogurt because that would give your mango lassi is coconut-y taste.
Mango lassi recipe:

Based on how sweet and ripe your mangoes are or in case you are making use of canned and sweetened mango pulp, then you would have to add more or less sugar or honey to your lassi.
In case you are using cardamom pods, then crush the pods for removing the seeds, and after that grind the seed with the help of a mortar and pestle.

Ingredients and their proportions:

• Plain yogurt 1 cup
• Milk ½ cup
• Chopped ripe mango, canned mango pulp, or frozen chopped mango 1 cup
• Sugar or honey 4 teaspoons, more or less as per your taste
• A pinch of ground cardamom
• Ice cubes

Instructions to follow for making mango lassi:

• Take a blender first. Put mango, milk, sugar, yogurt, and cardamom into it and blend it for around 2 minutes.
• In case you want to achieve a milkshake consistency and it is also a hot day, then blend in a few ice cubes at the same time.
• Sprinkle a pinch of cardamom powder before serving the lassi.
