Chicken Bharta is a famous Indian dish, which has got immense popularity all over India. Being a Punjabi nonvegetarian item, it is a bit spicy but extremely delicious. It is also a dependable dish to prepare in any party or occasion as its taste is universal. So, it is mostly liked by almost everyone.

Though the Chicken Bharta recipe needs some special ingredients, you can prepare it at home using the following method, which is not much headache.

Ingredients and their proportions

Shredded Chicken – 300 grams
Curd – ½ cup
Salt – 2 tsp (else as per taste)
Sugar – 1 tsp (else as per taste)
Refined oil – 2 tbsp
Butter – 30 grams
Black pepper powder – ½ tsp
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Cumin Powder – 1 tsp
Coriander powder – 1tsp
Onion – 3 pieces
Chilli – 5 pieces (green) and
1 piece (dried red chilli)
Ginger – 1 tsp
Garlic – 1 tsp
Cashew- 6-7 pieces
Melon seeds – 1 tsp
Poppy seeds- 1 tsp .
Cardamom – 2 pieces
Clove – 3 pieces
Cinnamon – 2 pieces
Garam Masala powder- ½ tsp
Chopped Boiled egg – 1 piece
Kasuri Methi – 1 pinch
Fresh cream – ¼ cup
Milk – 1 cup

Time: 2 hours (including preparation and marinating procedure)

Step 1: Preparing the chicken to marinate

Marinating is the first and foremost step of any non-veg recipe. In the Chicken Bharta recipe also it is required. First of all, it is necessary to ensure that the chicken is boneless and shaded. Then you have to start the procedure and you have to keep it for at least an hour. You have to marinate the 300 grams chicken with the following ingredients-


• Curd – ½ cup
• Salt – 1 tsp
• Black pepper powder – ½ tsp
• Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
• Cumin powder – 1 tsp
• Coriander powder – 1tsp

Step 2: Preparation of the other ingredients for cooking

In the preparation part of the ingredients, you have to make four kinds of spices pastes differently-


I. A paste of 3 onions + 5 green chillies
II. A paste of ginger + garlic (2tsp)
III. A paste of 6-7 pieces cashew + 1tsp melon seeds + 1 tsp poppy seeds
IV. 1 tsp tomato puree
And lastly, prepare a smashed boiled egg.


Now, all the ingredients are prepared to be cooked and you can turn on the flame if the 1 hour of marinating period is over.

Step 3: The cooking procedure

In the main cooking part, you have to add 3 tablespoons of refined oil and 25 grams of butter in the pan. After heating the oil and the butter, you should add the cinnamon, cardamom, clove, and one dried red chilli in that.

After the garam masalas are fried a little you should add the onion-chilli paste and ginger garlic paste in the pan and cook them for a while.

After a while, add the marinated chicken, salt, and sugar (as per your preferences) in the pan with the ingredients and toss and turn to mix them well.


After cooking for about 8 minutes add the tomato puree and again cook for another 5 minutes together.

Now add the cashew, melon seeds and poppy seeds paste with the chicken and cover the lid of the pan after mixing them well and cook for another 8-10 minutes. In between check whether the chicken has got boiled well.
After 8-10 minutes, open the lid and add the milk and the smashed boiled egg with the chicken and again cook for another 1-2 minutes.


Then add ½ tsp garam masala powder, the rest of the butter, and a pinch of Kasuri methi with the item. In this stage, also add some warm water if required. Boil it for a minute and turn off the flame and keep the item stand by with lid cover.


Lastly, Garnish with fresh cream and serve.
